The Healing Power of Nature

In a world increasingly dominated by screens, it's important to recognise the benefits of immersing ourselves in natural environments on our mental wellbeing.

Ecotherapy is rooted in the belief that humans are deeply connected to and affected by the natural world, there is a growing body of research which highlights the positive impact of reconnecting with nature.

Nature has an innate ability to induce a state of calm and relaxation and research suggests that immersing ourselves in nature can alleviate stress, improve overall mood, and life satisfaction.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce cortisol levels, and boost the production of serotonin which is a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of happiness.

Below are some ideas to help you incorporate ecotherapy practices into your daily routine:

  • Enjoy your morning tea or coffee outdoors enjoying the warmth of the sun.

  • Disconnect from technology and practice mindfulness during nature walks, immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the outdoors.

  •  Stay attuned to natural elements during daily commutes or outdoor activities by observing changes in seasons, birdcalls, or cloud formations, and taking time to appreciate these.

  • Explore local scenic trails, national parks, or beaches to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

  • Cultivate green spaces by nurturing indoor plants or engaging in gardening activities.

  • Surround yourself with images of nature at your workstation.

  • Incorporate flowers and plants into your workspace and home decor.

  • Exercise outdoors to reap the physical and mental benefits of nature's embrace.

  • Look out to the horizon when you have the opportunity too and be sure to take some deep breaths to reset the mind and body.
